New Tool Improves Risk Assessment for Age-Related Macular Degeneration

A new tool covering baseline retinal characteristics improves risk assessment for age-related macular degeneration, according to a report in the Archives of Ophthalmology.

Previous risk models have used factors such as smoking, dyslipidemia and certain genetic polymorphisms to predict AMD. But researchers at Oregon Health & Science University have incorporated patient phenotypic characteristics to improve accuracy.

 

Two retinal abnormalities used to calculate the simple risk score: presence of drusen and any abnormality in retinal pigmentation.
