In many chronic pain cases, the exact source of the pain can be unclear, making it difficult to treat.

In an interview, Torsten Gordh, MD, professor of pain medicine at Uppsala University Hospital, said a tracer marked with positrons is first injected into the bloodstream. The substance pools together at the site of the pain and a PET scan is then used to identify the site.
