MRI-Safe Spinal Cord Stimulator Implanted at OSU Medical Center

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center announced that its neurosurgeons — Ali Rezai, MD, and Dr. Milind Deogaonkar, MBBS — are among the first in the U.S. to successfully implant an MRI-safe spinal cord stimulator that will help relieve patients suffering from chronic back or limb pain.

In the past, patients with spinal cord stimulators couldn’t undergo full-body MRI scans due to concerns about the system being affected by the large magnetic fields and radio frequency energy involved in a scan. However, the new FDA-approved device, developed by Medtronic, is designed with enhancements to reduce or eliminate the hazards produced by the MRI.
