Most Patients Trust Surgeons to Choose Best Implant for Them

A recent study by an orthopedic spine surgeon with Peninsula Orthopaedic Associates and Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md., found while many patients believe surgeons select surgical implants based on preference, most said they trusted their surgeons would choose the best implant for their specific needs, according to a PRMC news release.

Scott C. McGovern, MD, lead researcher on “Patient Perceptions of Surgeon-Industry Relations,” presented his findings at the 2010 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. McGovern and his colleagues surveyed 1,000 patients, half of whom had prior spinal surgery implants or hip or knee replacements, and half who had been treated for similar conditions without surgery, according to the release. A vast majority of patients, 85 percent or more, said they believed their surgeon selects implants based on personal preference, medical research or to suggest the most appropriate device for them. Over 84 percent also said they believed their surgeon was considerate of their needs and honestly cared about them, according to the release.

Of the respondents, 93 percent said they believe surgeon-industry relationships are beneficial and appropriate, and 82 percent also said they believe a physician should be compensated for designing implants. Only one third suggested that physicians should help promote the implants they helped to design, according to the release.
