The new law, which goes into effect Nov. 5, specifies that nurse employees cannot work more than 12 hours in any given 24-hour period, except in emergency cases where the safety of the patient requires overtime and there is no reasonable alternative. The law is designed to improve nurse staffing levels as well as patient safety.
