Minnesota’s Fairview Health Services May Go Out-of-Network With Blue Cross Following Price Standoff

Fairview Health Services in Minnesota and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota are less than a month away from their current contract expiring, which could leave one of the state’s top hospital clinic groups out-of-network with the state’s largest health insurer, according to published reports.

The current Blue Cross contract with Fairview Health Services expires Aug. 23. Blue Cross members would then have to pay out-of-network charges at Fairview clinics. Blue Cross members will remain in-network at Fairview hospitals through Oct. 28.

Discussions between Fairview and Blue Cross continue.

Blue Cross is claiming that Fairview is demanding rates inconsistent with the market, while Fairview claims that is seeking prices similar to those paid by other plans, according to the Star Tribune.

To keep Fairview patients informed about the possible implications of failed negotiations, the organization has created a Web site that details what it will mean if Fairview goes out-of-network with Blue Cross and offers answers to other related questions.
