What one initiative is most important for ASCs to improve their infection control program?

Jack Wagner: Make absolutely certain personnel are appropriately trained in the use of the chemical disinfectants and are following instructions listed on the label. CMS and Certification agency surveyors’ are focusing on this area and looking for the slightest deviation by ASC staff. One reason for this initiative is because it is easy to identify (by the surveyor) and contaminated surfaces are proven to promote cross-contamination. Last, CMS may report violations to OSHA and the local public health agency, not to mention the media.

At Micro-Scientific, not only do we provide appropriate training and instructions for the use of our EPA and FDA approved products, we also provide laminated wall charts for display to re-enforce staff to follow appropriate protocols.
