The two healthcare organizations and university make up the three largest employers in the Detroit area, spending approximately $1.6 billion on supplies ranging from food to janitorial supplies. However, when the numbers are broken down, less than 10 percent of those supplies are brought in Detroit, according to the news report.
For the “buy local” strategy, the three organizations are first concentrating on buying food products and forging waste removal service contracts locally. Henry Ford will begin receiving bread products from a local bakery; the health system was previously receiving bread products from out of state. With added business from Wayne State, the local bakery Milano was able to hire two-part time employees, according to the news report.
