MedPAC Says Fraud and Abuse May Contribute to Regional Variations in Use of Medicare-Covered Services

Use of Medicare-covered services varies by as much as 30 percent from region to region and fraud and abuse may drive some of the highest reported service use, according to a new report by the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission.

The report said regions with high service use are not always those with high growth rates.

It clarified that regional variation in service use is not the same as regional variation in Medicare spending.
