In commentary issued to CMS, the Medical Device Manufacturers Association has restated their stance that payments to group purchasing organizations should be covered under “sunshine” provisions for transparency and competition purposes.

Thomas Novelli, MDMA vice president of government relations, believes the same rationale behind the Physician Payment Sunshine provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act should be applied to the GPO-manufacturer relationships. MDMA’s recommendations include reporting of medical device companies’ payments to GPOs, clear definitions of categories of payment to minimize repetitive reporting and use of a spreadsheet to report data to CMA.

“MDMA strongly believes that providing enhanced transparency within the manufacturer-GPO relationship will benefit all stakeholders,” Mr. Novelli said.
