The two physicians at the center will offer free eye exams, eyeglasses, medications, surgeries and anything else the patient may need that the center can provide to patients who are uninsured. The program will not include contact lenses or elective surgeries, such as cosmetic procedures or laser vision-correction surgeries, according to the report.

The center will offer free surgery as needed, including some eyelid surgeries and procedures to remove sties and growths on the eye. Other patients may be referred to Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center in Houma for more-involved surgeries, such as cataract or glaucoma surgeries.

There are no income guidelines for patients who will qualify for the free care.
