Los Angeles DME Business Owner Pleads Guilty to Medicare Fraud Scheme

Sylvester Ijewere, an owner and operator of a durable medical equipment company in Los Angeles, pleaded guilty to submitting $471,345 in false claims to Medicare between June 2007 and October 2009, according to a U.S. Justice Department news release.

Mr. Ijewere, who owned Maydads Medical Supply, admitted that he and others purchased fraudulent prescriptions and medical documents, which he used to submit false claims to Medicare for high-end power wheelchairs and other medical equipment. He admitted that the beneficiaries of the wheelchairs and other equipment did not need them, and that he knew the physician and beneficiary information he used came from fraudulent medical clinics and patient recruiters, according to the release.

Mr. Ijewere faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. His sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 16.
