When a Georgia pain clinic lured crowds of customers with billboard advertising, county officials passed new zoning restrictions for the clinic, forcing it to move on. But critics worry that making the drug less available for abusers would also make it harder for people in real pain to get it.
The Monitor reported that more people now die of oxycondone abuse than of heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine abuse combined. The nation’s 11,000 deaths from oxycondone overdoses in 2007 were three times the number in 2000.
