Layoffs at Former Ohio Surgery Center Attributed to Merger With Imaging Facility

The Medical Center of Newark (Ohio) has announced that it will layoff 10 percent of its staff less than a year after the facility completed a nearly $20 million expansion, according to the Newark Advocate.

The medical center was formed when the Newark Surgery Center was expanded to include a second floor for patient rooms and was connected to an imaging facility.

The equivalent of 17 full-time positions, primarily non-clinical, will be eliminated. The developer and manager of the facility indicated the layoffs are due to the merging of the facilities which created an overlap in positions, according to the Newark Advocate.

The facility is anticipating a decline in elective procedures due to the current financial crisis, although this was not a reason for the layoffs and no further layoffs are expected.
