A federal judge in Tennessee has awarded the U.S. government $82.6 million from three renal care companies that overbilled Medicare for home dialysis from 1999-2005, according to a Forbes report.
U.S. District Judge William J. Haynes Jr. ruled that Nashville-based Renal Care Group, Renal Care Group Supply and Fresnius Medical Care Holdings, which acquired Renal Care Group in 2006, “exhibited reckless disregard of legal mandates” in billing Medicare.
The case involves claims for Medicare payment for equipment to at least 3,979 patients. The $82.6 million includes $43.7 million in civil penalties.
