Joseph Sowell Named as SVP and Chief Development Officer of HCA

HCA has announced that Joseph A. Sowell III will become its senior vice president and chief development officer, effective Dec. 1, 2009, according to an HCA news release.

Mr. Sowell is currently a senior partner at Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis, based in Nashville, Tenn.  

Scott Becker, who has worked on the other side of many transactions with Mr. Sowell over the years, says, “Joe is one of the smartest and best focused business and healthcare attorneys in the country.” Mr. Becker enjoyed tremendously working on the other side of transactions with Mr. Sowell, a tough and smart adversary. He also noted he was pleased to no longer have to compete against Mr. Sowell.

According to his biography on the Waller Lansden Web site, his law practice has been focused in the areas of healthcare law, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, private equity financing, tax law and general corporate law, and he co-manages the firm’s Corporate and Commercial Transactions practice.

Mr Sowell has recognized in The Best Lawyers in America for his work in corporate and healthcare law.

In additional to his work in healthcare law, Mr. Sowell also served as the head of development, and later as the chief operating officer, of a healthcare company which developed comprehensive ambulatory care centers.

In his new position, Mr. Sowell will be responsible for all activities related to mergers, acquisitions and divestitures for HCA, which operates 163 hospitals and 105 ASC in 20 states and England. Those responsibilities include all development functions and transactions involving hospitals, outpatient centers, physician practices and real estate.

“Joe has extensive experience in healthcare transactions, and he is familiar with HCA and our company’s culture,” R. Milton Johnson, CFO and executive vice president of HCA, said in the release. “The depth and breadth of his experience with healthcare transactions will allow us to consolidate and more effectively manage HCA’s various development functions. We are pleased he is joining our senior management team.”

Mr. Sowell earned received his law degree from the University of Alabama in 1981. He also has a master of laws degree, which he earned from the University of Florida in 1982, according to the release. Mr. Sowell is a member of the Tennessee Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Health Law Committee of the Nashville Bar Association.
