The FDA clearance covers Snowden-Pencer scissors in Metzenbaum, Mini-Metzenbaum and hook-blade configurations — in both 36 and 45 millimeter sizes.

The Snowden-Pencer take-apart laparoscopic scissors are expected to be commercially available in early 2013.

“Our new Snowden-Pencer scissors are designed for sterility and product safety for patients and to provide exceptional performance and ease-of-use for surgeons and medical personnel,” said Andreas Lex, vice president and general manager of V. Mueller and Snowden-Pencer surgical instruments for CareFusion, in the release. “These new scissors are a complementary addition to our growing line of take-apart instruments and to our already extensive portfolio of products dedicated to performance.”

CareFusion is headquartered in San Diego.
