In the News: Healthcare in Cincinnati Seeing Significant Outpatient Surgery Influence

The Business Courier of Cincinnati reports on the growing influence of outpatient surgery on the city’s healthcare and the ongoing competition for procedures between hospitals and ASCs.

The story cites a slight decline in inpatient procedures from 2006 to 2007, and a growth in hospital-based outpatient procedures, from 178,300 in 2005 to 197,600 in 2007, with more than 77 percent of surgeries performed by hospitals now done on an outpatient basis, according to the Greater Cincinnati Health Council.

The Ohio Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers (OAASC) reports that its members, which include about half of the ASCs in the state, perform about 387,600 procedures per year, according to Business Courier of Cincinnati.

The story discussing a growing challenge to hospitals coming in the form of inpatient beds in surgery centers, such as those planned for Surgery Center of Evendale and the Butler County Medical Center, both Prexus Health Partners facilities.

Comments on the rising popularity of surgery centers as an avenue of care come from Randy Leffler, executive director of OAAASC, and Don Jansen, a spokesman for Prexus.
