Illinois Physician Pleads Guilty to Illegally Dispensing Medication

Sukhdarshan S. Bedi, MD, of Energy, Ill., and his three healthcare clinics pleaded guilty to various charges related to illegally distributing controlled substances, according to a news release from the United States District Court in Benton, Ill.

Dr. Bedi pleaded guilty charges of obstruction of justice, tampering with a witness and illegal dispensation of controlled substances, in this case methadone, according to the release. Dr. Bedi also agreed to voluntarily surrender his medical license and withdraw his application for reinstatement of his DEA Registration. He also agreed to pay criminal restitution in the amount of $47,784.31 to the medical program administered by the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services.

Dr. Bedi’s healthcare corporations, Illinois Healthcare Clinic, P.C., M-CFHC and Galatia Medical Center Corp., pleaded guilty to conspiracy to illegally dispense a controlled substance and healthcare fraud. The three corporations agreed to be jointly and severally responsible with Dr. Bedi for paying the criminal restitution, according to the release.

The counts Dr. Bedi pleaded to carry maximum penalties of up to 20 years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000 or both for obstruction and tampering with a witness and up to 20 years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to $1 million or both for distributing a controlled substance. The corporations face penalties of 5 years’ probation, a fine of up to $5 million or both for the conspiracy charges and up to 5 years’ probation, a fine of up to $500,000 or both for healthcare fraud, according to the release.

The government will drop the other charges against Dr. Bedi and the corporations upon sentences.
