The test measures a protein called procalcitonin. Patients with high levels of the protein face a greater risk of severe sepsis or septic shock. Since the window of treatment for sepsis is narrow, the test allows physicians and other healthcare professionals to detect this risk before it is too late, according to the report.
Approximately 300 U.S. hospitals are currently using the test.
