Healthcare Adds 14,500 Jobs in January 2010

The healthcare industry, including hospitals, ASCs and physicians’ offices, added 14,500 jobs from Dec. 2009-Jan. 2010, according to a news release from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Overall, unemployment fell 0.3 percentage points to 9.7 percent in January, and nonfarm payroll employment remained relatively unchanged, according to the release.

Ambulatory healthcare services, which include occupations outside of the healthcare industry, added 15,300 jobs in January, with seasonally adjusted employment up to 5.863 million from 5.848 million.

Physicians’ offices added 5,600 jobs, with seasonally adjusted employment at 2.310 million, up from 2.305 million in December.

Hospitals added 5,000 jobs, with seasonally adjusted employment at 4.699 million, up from 4.694 million in December.
