Growth in Health Expenditures Expected to Outpace Overall Economic Growth

Growth in national health expenditures in the United States is expected to be greater than the growth of the overall economy in 2008 and 2009 as a result of the recession, according to CMS.

NHE growth is expected at 6.1 percent from 2007 to 2008, while growth in the overall economy, as measured by the gross domestic product, is expected at 3.5 percent. For 2009, NHE growth is projected at 5.5 percent while GDP is expected to be 0.2 percent.

This NHE growth will occur despite an overall decrease in healthcare spending.

Hospital spending growth is expected to decrease from 2007 to 2009, as is the growth of prescription drug spending and physician and clinical services spending

In 2010, NHE is projected to decelerate to 4.6 percent as a result of the projected decline in Medicare spending growth due to a planned 21-percent cut to Medicare physician payment rates that year.

Growth in NHE is anticipated to begin accelerating in 2011 under current law and should eventually reach 7.2 percent by 2018, according to CMS.
