Great Place to Work: Surgicare of Lake Charles (Lake Charles, La.)

Staff confidence in its leadership is a critical element in whether staff members view their employment fondly. Strong leadership not only serves as a great motivator, but it can also provide comfort for staff members who can feel confident that their place of work is likely to remain open even during challenging economic times.

The leadership of Surgicare of Lake Charles (La.) has earned its staff’s confidence through a strong record of success and quality care since the organization opened in 1975.

“If I were thinking of starting an ASC, I would certainly want to have the input from leadership that has withstood the problems in the medical field over the past 25 years,” says Kathy LeJeune, business office director and manager for the ASC. “The departments are supervised by managers that have the passion and drive for success, the vision for growth and appreciation of staff.”

The center, a subsidiary of Community Health Systems, performs about 400 procedures monthly in five operating rooms and two procedure rooms. The center’s 19 partners and 26–30 physician users perform procedures in ENT, pain management, orthopedics, GYN, plastic surgery, dental surgery, general surgery and podiatry.

The ASC is still thriving today, more than 30 years after it opened, thanks to the foundation established by its management team, Ms. LeJeune says.

“Without dedicated managers and staff that are team focused, you have a structure only,” she says. “I feel this fact is why so many businesses do not prosper to the ability that can be achieved. Success is attainable with your leadership team, and the ability to promote a team environment.”
