Since orthopedic surgeons from Moore Clinic in Lexington opened the ASC in Dec. 2007, the facility has a return rate of 45 percent on its patient satisfaction questionnaires, 100 percent on patients recommending the facility to others and a very high scoring for all categories associated with a patient’s experience at the center, according to Janet Cordovano, RN, nurse manager for Moore.
“The staff really loves what they do — I couldn’t ask for better employees,” says Ms. Cordovano. “One of the key attributes of the center is attitude. Each team member brings their ‘A’ game every day, assisting each other to get the job done as efficiently as possible.”
Moore is multi-specialty ASC that specializes in orthopedics. It has 11 physician users. The center’s orthopedic surgeons are very active in the community, serving as team physicians for high school/college athletes. The ASC has two active operating rooms and one procedure room occupying 17,000 sq. ft. The center employs 11 registered nurses and surgical techs to operate the rooms. The center has an additional two operating rooms which it plans to utilize in 2009.
The center, which was developed and is managed by Practice Partners in Healthcare, was built with both patients and staff comfort in mind, says Ms. Cordovano. It includes flat screens in the lobby, pre-op and staff lounge. The staff uses top-of-the-line equipment, having access to electronic medical records and patient MRIs and x-rays which can be accessed electronically and used in the OR
“The beautiful atmosphere within a comfortable work environment assists employees in their daily tasks,” she says. “The center is a fun environment.”
This high level of comfort, enjoyment and pride associated with the facility translates to the staff members’ efforts.
“The clinical and non-clinical staff work together to ensure that the patient flow and necessary documentation allow for ease of admission and timely discharge,” says Ms. Cordovano. “All of the registered nurses are willing to cross train to other areas and the entire staff is willing to do whatever it takes to make the day run smoothly and the cases go well. Non-nursing staff go the extra mile as well in wearing a number of hats that assure that the cases are prepared and ready for the next day.”
The staff members find some of their motivation to strive for excellence from Ms. Cordovano, says Larry Taylor, president and CEO of Practice Partners.
“Janet knows what is required to operate a successful center and leads by action and words,” he says. “She is one of the most hard working nurse managers I have ever hired. The bottom line that makes the center a great place to work is simply the people. The staff, administration and the physicians knows the formula for success — communication, kindness, work ethic and the ability to get along.”
