Working in morning and afternoon shifts, the volunteers built three picnic tables and four wooden benches, installed a bird bath and sitting area, built and hung bird feeders, planted flowers and shrubs and created a gardening area. In the afternoon, the children arrived to find their new outdoor area and were able to plant flowers and other plants in their new garden.
Transportation to the volunteer site from the conference hotel and more than $2,500 in supplies for the project were funded by a number of corporate sponsors.
Kenny Spitler, senior vice president of development for HealthMark Partners and chair of this year’s event, said that his biggest goal of the event was to find a project where the volunteers would make a difference that would last and could be remembered. With the addition of a new outdoor area for the children of the Boys and Girls Club, the volunteers are sure to leave a lasting impression.
“Personally, I thought the event was extremely successful,” says Mr. Spitler. “There was a lot of excitement from the kids when they saw the new outdoor area, and they seemed to really embrace learning about the hummingbird feeders and the garden area. It was phenomenal to be able to watch the kids in the new area; seeing their excitement was really rewarding.”
