UPMC Surgeon, Nurse Disciplined for Transplanting Kidney From Donor With Hepatitis C

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has disciplined a surgeon and a nurse after it discovered the professionals were involved in the transplant of a kidney from a donor infected with hepatitis C, according to a Reuters news report.

The surgeon was demoted, while the nurse was suspended for their involvement in the transplantation of the kidney, according to the news report. Simultaneously, the hospital has suspended the live-donor liver program “as a precaution,” while the hospital evaluates the program’s donor screening process and protocols, according to the news report.

The hospital has notified the United Network for Organ Sharing, which announced that it will also be conducting a review, according to the news report.
