Researcher Proposes Using Blood to Fuel Implantable Devices

A German researcher is proposing to use energy from sugar and oxygen in the blood to power implantable devices, according to a report by News Medical.

An energy-conversion device attached to the bloodstream would use noble metal catalysts like platinum that have long-term stability and can be easily sterilized, said the researcher at the University of Freiburg.

 

Currently there is no method to supply more power to electric-powered implants. Pacemaker batteries, for example, need to be replaced every eight years in an invasive procedure that is risky for patients.
