The study, in the Brain Research Bulletin, found that the pain relief from meditation appears to come through manipulation of brain waves, called alpha waves, which originate primarily in the occipital lobes.

Other research has suggested that alpha waves can be involved in inhibiting communication in the brain, which could include pain signals.
