Emory Healthcare clinic reports appointment system hack: 4 fast facts

Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare announced a January 3, 2017, hack of one of its appointment systems.

Here are four fast facts:

1. The hacker deleted Emory Clinic’s Orthopaedics & Spine Center and Brain Health Center appointment information database and demanded a ransom for restoration.

2. The center utilized the Waits & Delays application for patient appointments. The database included “patients’ names, dates of birth, contact information, internal medical record numbers and basic appointment information such as dates of service, physician names and whether patients required imaging,” according to a statement on its website.

3. The center is notifying involved patients.

4. In response to the breach, Emory Healthcare launched an internal investigation and is reviewing its security measures.
