Four focus groups were formed to collect information on the factors that influence nurses’ compliance with Standard Precautions. One of the main reasons influencing nurses’ compliance was barriers that impede nurses’ ability to follow infection control standards, such as an emergency situation with a patient or lack of protective equipment such as masks and gloves. Other reasons influencing nurses’ compliance are benefits, severity, susceptibility to microorganisms, cues to action and self-efficacy.
