Drug Shortage Leads to Higher Costs for Houston Hospitals

Some Houston hospitals are now paying higher costs due to drug shortages, according to a Houston Business Journal report.

Veronica Franklin, acting chief of pharmacy at Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, says that she can no longer assume in-demand prescription drugs will be in stock for patients. Ms. Franklin estimates that the shortage is increasing the pharmacy’s budget by 5 to 7 percent in 2012.
