Mr. Nathaniel pleaded guilty in October to conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud. Mr. Nathaniel began working as a contract therapist in Dec. 2003 for Suresh Chand, who owned and operated several sham physical and occupational therapy companies. According to plea documents, Mr. Nathaniel admitted that he, Mr. Chand and others created fictitious therapy files appearing to document physical and occupational therapy services provided to Medicare beneficiaries, when in fact no such services had been provided. These services were then billed to Medicare.
Mr. Nathaniel admitted that during the course of the scheme he signed approximately 1,250 fictitious physical therapy files, indicating that he had provided physical therapy services to Medicare beneficiaries, when in fact he had not. He also admitted that he was paid between $90 and $110 for each file he falsified, and that the falsified physical therapy files billed to Medicare totaled approximately $6.25 million. Medicare paid approximately $2.875 million on those claims, according to the release.
Mr. Chand previously pleaded guilty for his role in the scheme.
