Connecticut Lawmakers Consider Prohibiting Gifts to Healthcare Providers

Connecticut lawmakers are considering a proposal that would prohibit drug and medical device companies from providing gifts, including meals, to healthcare providers and would require the disclosure of payments to physicians that exceed $1,000, according to a report in the Hartford Courant.

Connecticut is the latest of several states to move toward banning gifts and requiring the disclosure of payments to physicians, according to the report.

Proponents of the ban say that gifts from drug and device companies influence physicians to select certain products over others that might perform equally well at a reduced cost. However, the Connecticut Pharmacists Association and industry groups contend that a statewide ban is unnecessary due to existing federal rules and ethical codes for healthcare providers.

No date has been set for a vote on the proposal.
