The Lynchburg, Va.-based company announced the $6.6 million project last year, which includes a two–operating room ASC, diagnostic imaging and a 24-hour emergency department. The hearing will evaluate Centra’s request for a certificate of public need, according to the report.

Opposition to the center comes from Danville Regional Medical Center, which says that the Danville area already has too many operating rooms than needed. The hospital also accuses Centra of attempting to take away higher paying patients, which would affect its ability to support uncompensated care, according to the report.

Centra responded to the accusations saying local physicians approached the company and developed the concept of the ASC. The company also indicated that it is not trying to take patients away from the hospital; rather, the surgery center would help bring back patients seeking treatment outside of the community, according to the report.
