The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services updated guidelines to include guidance on emergency equipment requirements for ambulatory surgery centers, according to an Ambulatory Surgery Center Association of Illinois report.

Earlier this year, CMS revised advance directive notification guidance, and as a result ASCs are no longer prescribed a specific list of emergency equipment that must be available in every operating room. Now, requirements state that the ASC’s governing body and medical staff must specify emergency requirement appropriate to the ASC’s patient population.

This equipment must be available immediately during emergencies and maintained by appropriate personnel.
