CMS has appointed Marilyn Tavenner to a new No. 2 position, principal deputy administrator, in part of a slight reorganization, according to a report by the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

Ms. Tavenner most recently served as secretary of Health and Human Resources for Virginia, and previously was group president of outpatient services at HCA and CEO of Johnston-Willis Hospital and Chippenham Medical Center in Richmond, Va., according to the report.

The creation of the new position is part of a “proposed modest realignment,” according to HFMA, that also establishes an Office of External Affairs and Beneficiary Services and four new centers to be led by deputy administrators. The reorganization awaits approval by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and is expected to take effect within 60 days.
