The charter school was developed by the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council, a trade group of Chicago hospitals and other medical providers and the Instituto del Progreso Latino, a career development non-profit for Latino students.
Instituto Health Sciences Career Academy will enroll 160 students this fall and will focus on math and science education. Students will also be able to earn credits by shadowing healthcare workers, according to the report.
The school intends to certify students for entry-level healthcare positions such as pharmacy technicians or assistant physical therapists upon graduation, according to the report.
The development of the school came in response to a growing shortage of healthcare workers in the Chicago area. Chicago hospitals had openings for 3,000 nurses in March, according to the report.
