The research, presented at the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, found that patients taking proton pump inhibitors were more than three times as likely as others to develop diarrhea caused by C. diff.
The theory behind the findings is that PPIs decrease acidity in the stomach, allowing C. diff. to survive longer.
