Sandy Berreth, RN, MS, CASC, is the administrator of Brainerd Lakes Surgery Center in Baxter, Minn., a multispecialty ASC that performs general surgery, gynecology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, facial plastics, ENT, urology, podiatry and pain management. She has been with the center since it opened in 2005 and is currently a surveyor for AAAHC.
During Ms. Berreth’s tenure, Brainerd Lakes has achieved the Edgesurvey’s APEX Quality Award for overall patient satisfaction for the last two years. Ms. Berreth also serves as a board member of the Minnesota Ambulatory Surgery Center Association and Board of Ambulatory Surgery Certification.
Based on her ASC leadership and surveyor experience, Ms. Berreth offered 10 tips to go above and beyond in a surgery center accreditation survey, including demonstration that all decisions go through the surgery center board according to the 2009 Conditions for Coverage by CMS. “If the administrator has the authority to make decisions in the surgery center, you have to have somewhere in your minutes that the board gives full authority to the administrator to conduct business,” she said.
At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
