As more and more physicians turn to hospital employment as a means for greater stability, Mr. O’Sullivan says ASCs will be challenged and must be prepared to generate more revenue with fewer cases. “Combating this trend is hard,” he said. “ASCs will have to continue to be more cost-effective to maintain their margins.”

In addition to his ongoing work at VMG Health, Mr. O’Sullivan was a founder of Practice Performance, a third-party business process outsourcing firm serving medical practices in Texas, Colorado and South Carolina, and PracticeTech, a provider of technology solutions and support within the healthcare industry. Both companies were successfully sold to MedSynergies in 2006.

Before founding VMG Health, Mr. O’Sullivan worked as part of the financial advisory services group at Ernst & Young. He is currently a member of several healthcare groups, including the American Surgical Hospital Association, American College of Healthcare Executives and the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
