ASC Leader to Know: Dr. Thomas Simpson of Iowa City Ambulatory Surgery Center

Thomas A. Simpson, MD, is the chairman of the board of directors for the Iowa City Ambulatory Surgery Center. During the planning and development of the ASC, he led the board in considering which services the multi-specialty center could provide and how it could best ease the patient load at local hospitals. Dr. Simpson also serves as president of the board of directors for Mercy of Iowa City Regional PHO.

When the Iowa City Ambulatory Surgical Center opened, Dr. Simpson told the Corridor Business News the facility would improve the local medical community. “The new center will be very convenient for patients and their families, and the care will be prompt and timely,” he said. “Having a facility like this will also help us recruit more of the high-quality physicians that this area needs.”

Dr. Simpson served as president of the Iowa academy of Otolaryngology, as well as legislative representative for the board of governors of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery from 2000-2005. He is a member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the American Board of Otolaryngology and the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons, among others.

Dr. Simpson earned his MD from the University of Iowa College of Medicine and completed a general surgery internship at Gunderson Clinic/Lutheran Hospital in Lacrosse, Wisc. He returned to the University of Iowa Department of Otolaryngology to complete his residency in head and neck surgery and was board certified in 1996.
