ASC Leader to Know: Dr. Stephen Hochschuler of the Texas Back Institute

Stephen Hochschuler, MD, is co-founder of the Texas Back Institute in Plano, which began in 1977 in partnership with Ralph Rashbaum, MD. Their joint vision for the institute was to create “an integrated multispecialty spinal clinic that included prevention, conservative care, surgical care, rehabilitation and research and development.” Thirty-five years later, the center is heralded as one of the premier organizations for spine healthcare, becoming the first institution in the United States to prescribe outpatient myelography and the first to lead an FDA study of the artificial disc and artificial disc replacement.

In addition to his leadership through the Texas Back Institute, Dr. Hochschuler has served as president of the Spine Arthroplasty Society and is a founding member of the American Board of Spinal Surgery. He is also a founding member of the Spine Arthroplasty Society and the American Board of Spinal Surgery. Dr. Hochschuler has also served in leadership positions of several spine technology companies, including SpineMark and Innovative Spinal Technologies. In a recent Becker’s Spine Review interview, Dr. Hochschuler noted the importance of equalizing money made on spine cases for surgeons. “The country sees surgeons as the reason for increased healthcare costs,” he said. “There have been unnecessary attacks on performing spine surgery. The vast majority of spine surgeons don’t perform unnecessary procedures, but the ones who do are publicized in the media.”

Dr. Hochschuler earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He also spent time in the United States Air Force as a captain and major.
