John Byers, MD, is an otolaryngologist with the Surgery Center of Greensboro (N.C.) and Greensboro Ear, Nose and Throat Associates, where he has practiced since 1994. Dr. Byers currently serves as medical director and a member of the board of directors at Surgery Center of Greensboro.
Dr. Byers completed his medical education at the University of Texas and went on to complete an internship in general surgery and residency in otolaryngology, both at the University of Oklahoma. He is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, North Carolina Medical Society and Greensboro Medical Society.
In a recent interview with Becker’s ASC Review, Dr. Byers discussed four key priorities for ASC physician investors in 2012, including planning for drug shortages. “Physician leaders need to get in touch with the FDA because that’s the only way the pressure gets built up to take care of these shortages,” he said. “What I perceive as the problem is that nobody really wants to make a big deal out of this locally because nobody wants patients to hear there’s a shortage of anesthetics.”
