Gregory Horner, MD, is the managing partner of Smithfield Surgical Partners, a national ASC management and development firm. The company has a proven track record of working with physicians to develop healthcare facilities ranging from medical office buildings to surgical facilities and medical malls.
In addition to his leadership with Smithfield Surgical Partners, Dr. Horner is chief executive officer of Pleasanton Surgery Center and Hacienda Surgery Center, a hand surgeon with Tri-Valley Orthopedic Specialists and a board member of the California Ambulatory Surgery Association. Prior to forming Smithfield, he founded multiple ASCs.
Dr. Horner completed his medical training at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and a residency in orthopedic surgery at UCLA as well as a New England Combined Hand Surgery Fellowship at various locations in the greater Boston area.
At the 10th Annual Orthopedic, Spine and Pain Management-Driven ASC Conference in Chicago on June 15, Dr. Horner said joint, spine and heart procedures are moving away from the hospital, and orthopedic surgeons can take advantage of this trend if entrepreneurship and ASCs are a part of their strategy.
“There is a huge profit margin there, and once orthopedic surgeons think of it as their own ecosystem, they can build off that for any service in the healthcare system,” Dr. Horner said.
