Carla Daley Shehata, RN, BSN, is vice president of operations for Regent Surgical Health, an ambulatory surgery center management and development company based in Westchester, Ill. In this role, Ms. Shehata focuses on helping surgery centers obtain a better grasp of clinical issues.

In a contributing column published in Becker’s ASC Review, Ms. Shehata discussed five new CMS standards ASCs are mandated to follow in order to maintain compliance: governing body responsibility, ongoing quality assessment and performance improvement, environment, infection control and safe surgical checklist.

“Infection control has become even more crucial to the ASC industry since the implementation of the standards in the 2009 Conditions for Coverage,” Ms. Shehata said. “Within the topic of infection control, CMS will be inspecting to ensure the ASC has an infection control program that minimizes infections and communicable diseases and maintains a sanitary environment. CMS will also be checking to ensure that there a designated qualified professional with infection control training leading the facility’s infection control program.”

Ms. Shehata has nearly two decades of nursing experience, including a managing stint at Kettering Medical Center-Sycamore in Miamisburg, Ohio. She earned an associate degree in nursing from Kettering College of Medical Arts and a bachelor degree in nursing from Indiana Wesleyan University.
