Mr. Jacobs directs the company’s strategy and growth in his role as CEO — a position he initially filled in 2003. He works to improve operations, reduce costs and reduce risks for MedHQ’s customers across 10 states through effective management of personnel, payroll, benefit solutions, business planning and cash management.
Mr. Jacbos also serves as the administrator of EndoLabs, an endoscopy surgery center in Valparaiso, Ind. His prior experience includes work in project engineering and project management for nuclear power plants, including 10 years with Duke Engineering & Services and its predecessor firms. Mr. Jacobs has an MBA from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Iowa State University.
Mr. Jacobs discussed profitable human resources tactics in ambulatory surgery centers in an interview with Becker’s ASC Review. An important component to the employee hiring process is implementing a peer-based interviewing system, he said. To facilitate the peer review process, employees should be given a written interview guide that consists of pre-written questions intended to hone in on the candidate’s professional experience. “Have the candidate talk about what they’ve done in the past,” said Mr. Jacobs. “If you’re interviewing for a receptionist, you want that person to be friendly, have a smile on their face and readily greet people when they come in. So, in a question, you may ask them to about a time when they’ve been in a customer service role, having them elaborate on how they approached customers and made them feel welcome.” This will help current employees determine if the candidate demonstrates a desired skill or value, he said.
