Todd Mello is partner and co-founder of HealthCare Appraisers, a provider of healthcare valuation and consulting services in Castle Rock, Colo. Mr. Mello, who has more than 20 years of healthcare experience, has been instrumental in helping HealthCare Appraisers grow to become one of the healthcare industry’s premier valuation firms over the past 11 years.
Mr. Mello has extensive experience in healthcare valuation, including business valuation, physician practice acquisition and employment, service/other compensation arrangement valuation and litigation support. He is an accredited senior appraiser by the American Society of Appraisers and an accredited valuation analyst by the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts. He is also a member of both of these professional associations. Mr. Mello also offers expert insights through speaking engagements and webinars.
During a 2011 webinar hosted by Becker’s ASC Review and HealthCare Appraisers, Mr. Mello and Jason L. Ruchaber, another partner at the firm, discussed valuation issues impacting ambulatory surgery centers. Mr. Mello said the fair market value standard in most healthcare-related appraisals is defined somewhat differently from the standard definition, including what is italicized below. Fair market value is defined as “the price at which property would change hands between a hypothetical willing and able buyer and a hypothetical willing and able seller.” Both parties would be “acting at arm’s length in an open and unrestricted market, when neither is under compulsion to buy or sell … between well informed parties who are not otherwise in a position to generate business for the other party.”
Prior to founding Healthcare Appraisers, Mr. Mello worked as the vice president of business development at OMNA Medical Partners in Boca Raton, Fla., which was formerly a national neuro-musculoskeletal physician management company. He also served as a senior healthcare consultant with Ernst & Young in Los Angeles and director of analysis and development with FHP.
