He also commented on the trend of more physicians choosing the hospital setting rather than private practice. Though many ASCs worry about the draw of the hospital for new physicians, Mr. Zasa says surgery centers in joint ventures with hospitals can benefit from the continuous stream of new providers.
An expert on ambulatory business development, management, expansion and acquisition, Mr. Zasa has been in the ASC industry for 20 years. He entered healthcare as an administrator for the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, then worked at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham, operating the 552-bed hospital and developing satellite clinics and ambulatory businesses. He founded his first ambulatory services company, Premier Ambulatory Systems, in the early 1990s and subsequently led the acquisition of 15 ASCs across the country.
Mr. Zasa co-founded Woodrum/Ambulatory Systems Development in 1996, one year after he was named as CEO of one of the nation’s 500 fastest growing companies by Inc. magazine. Woodrum/Ambulatory Systems Development was reorganized into ASD Management in 2009.
Mr. Zasa is a nationally recognized lecturer and author who has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Ambulatory Care Management.
