Since its inception in 2006, DISC has become an official medical services provider of the United States Olympic Team, Red Bull’s North American athletes and the Los Angeles Kings. This success fueled the late 2011 opening of a second DISC facility in Orange County.
Dr. Bray launched DISC after a tenure at Cedars-Sinai, where he founded The Institute for Spinal Disorders. A Baylor College of Medicine graduate, he has also served as the director of neurosurgery and headed the spinal programs at St. John’s Medical Center, Century City Hospital and Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital. During 20 years of combined active and reserve duty with the United States Air Force, Dr. Bray received multiple medals and commendations for his work developing medical protocols and teaching wartime trauma techniques.
Discussing the future of outpatient spine surgery in an interview with Becker’s ASC Review, Dr. Bray said that it is important for surgery centers to create a rational business plan. “The future is in surgery centers and specialty hospitals, so it’s important to rationally and reasonably develop a business plan, budget and commitment to the center,” he said. “Centers where we perform high acuity cases aren’t little surgery centers where you perform 10 minute procedures; they must be designed and developed well to meet the needs of your patients.” Dr. Bray estimated it may take a $9 million investment to equip a new spine surgery center with the appropriate infection control measures and surgical equipment, but said that having a savvy business plan could mean partners recoup those costs quickly through solid contracts.
