Dr. ScarlettDr. Scarlett received his medical degree from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and completed both his residency in anesthesia and his fellowship in pain management at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. Prior to joining Advanced Pain Management, he served as an assistant professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Board-certified in pain management and anesthesiology, Dr. Scarlett has clinical interests in the treatment of spinal, arthritic and cancer pain.

Dr. Scarlett commented on Medicare’s proposed cancellation of TENS reimbursement in an interview with Becker’s ASC Review. “I see [the decision] as yet another setback in the field of pain management,” he said. “Any depletion in the treatment arsenal is a setback for a difficult to treat condition. Opioids, antidepressants and muscle relaxants provide some nonnarcotic benefit, but they often have side effects. Many of my patients, particularly the elderly, want a fast-acting solution for their pain that provides minimal sedation and does not affect their mental clarity or bowel function. The TENS unit is an excellent option for these patients and others who will suffer if TENS treatments are no longer covered by CMS.”
